For instance to hand made products, agricultural
activities (cattle farming, rice farming) and a school visit.
These activities are genuine and not performed for tourist purposes.
If you want then you can participate in these activities, try
for instance sowing or harvesting rice. There is also time to
explore the village on your own. See how local food Khanom chin
("Lao spaghetti") is made in a hot oven patio under
tropical conditions, have lunch on a village terrace, visit
the afternoon market or rent a car and explore some very scenic
routes in the region.
Your room has a double bed with mosquito net
and fan. The accommodation and sanitary facilities are simple
but good. An English speaking guide will be available during
your entire stay. The guide can act as translator, bridging
the language barrier and making the contact and communication
with the local people much easier and certainly a lot of fun.
The guide will also take you along the organized activities
and will be your coach during your stay.
A homestay in Thailand is for many visitors
the most impressive experience of their holiday. The warmth
and hospitality of the Thai people, the spontaneity of the children,
the authentic rural country life, the quietness with which time
slowly passes by and the many low-profile, but very pleasant
possibilities for spending leisure time are truly unique experiences.
Day 1. Khampom
Upon your morning arrival in Khonkaen city you will be picked
up by our local English speaking guide who will take you to
your host family in the country village Khampom. Here you can
experience the quiet and authentic Thai country life. Accompanied
by your guide you will make a bicycle ride through the village
and the surrounding rice fields. During the ride you will stop
from time to time to observe local handicraft activities, such
as a "factory" where rice is being processed to "Lao
spaghetti" on a hot stone oven (under tropical conditions!)
and a straw mat production area. Before dinner is served you
can stroll through the village at your own leisure or accompanied
by your guide, who has a lot of inside information and can tell
you anecdotes about village life. During dinner - prepared by
your family host - you will be warmly welcomed by the local
Thai village people. Overnight stay at the host family (D).
Day 2. Village life & farming
After breakfast you will visit the local school and see how
a school day starts. You can even do some teaching of your own.
It will be big fun and the children always love to learn English,
especially English songs. This school visit and the direct contact
with the schoolchildren will be one of your more memorable experiences.
Following the school visit you will go to the rice fields. Your
guide will explain about rice farming and cattle farming. You
can see how rice is sown or
harvested (depending on the season). If you want then you can
help and do some manual labour yourself. Lunch is taken at a
local noodle & rice food stall. Later in the afternoon you
will buy the ingredients for your evening meal at the local
village market. The family host mother will prepare dinner for
you on a stone oven. You can watch or, more fun so, help her
do the cooking while she will show you how. Your guide can do
the translation. This often leads to very comical moments. During
dinner you can observe the village's evening activities and
talk with the Thai people in a relaxing way. Overnight stay
again with the host family (B, L, D).
Day 3. Free to spend at own
leisure
This day is free to spend at your own leisure. You can take
an easy stroll through the village or revisit the places that
you found most interesting the past 2 days but had no time yet
to explore further. Visit the village temple and see how the
monks live. For early risers: see how monks humbly receive their
daily alms at sunrise. Have lunch in a noodle stall. You can
rent a bicycle and explore the area or rent a car and go to
further located areas: tour along the Mekong river, visit the
Khmer temple complex at Phimai, visit the vineyards in neighboring
province Loei, see the historical sites of Chiang Khan or walk
through one of the many beautiful forest parks. Transport can
be arranged by your guide. Overnight stay again with the host
family. As this will be your last dinner with the host family,
probably half the village will want to say goodbye to you. Following
Isaan tradition you will receive a lot of good wishes and a
wrist full of little ropes (B, D).
Day 4. End homestay
After breakfast, transfer to Khonkaen city and end homestay
(B).
An extension of the homestay is possible, you
can extend your stay with as many nights as you want.
