Just before Lampang, we will visit Wat Phrathat
Lampang Luang. Lovely old buildings are found within the fortified
compound of what is considered the finest wooden temple with
a wealth of decoration characteristic of Lanna art at its best.
This marvellous collection of religious buildings are considered
to be of the finest found in Thailand. The most outstanding
structure in the complex is the open sided Viharn Luang, believed
to have been built in 1476. The triple tiered roof of the viharn
is supported by teak pillars that have been finely decorated.
Behind the viharn is the principle chedi, standing 45m high
and mad from stone, covered with copper and brass plates. The
chedi was erected in 1449 and later restored in 1496. The oldest
of the buildings is the Viharn Phra Phut, thought to date back
to the 13th century.
We will stay overnight at Lampang River Lodge.
Lampang River Lodge is located 6 kilometres South of Lampang,
on the banks of the Wang River in beautiful natural surroundings.
The Lodge consists of 60 beautifully decorated Thai style bungalows,
air conditioned and with modern facilities. The hotel facilities
furthermore include a cosy restaurant serving both Thai and
International dishes.
Day 2. ( BL ) From Lampang
to Chiang Mai ( 90 kilometres )
After breakfast, we will tour Lampang by horse
drawn carts. One of the more pleasurable sights in Lampang are
its horse drawn carts. Although the more modern modes of transport
have overwhelmed the streets of most cities, these equine-driven
carts are still a form of public transport around town.
We continue to the Thai Elephant Conservation Centre, which
is located in the Tung Kwian forest of Amphoe Hang Chat, about
38 kilometres from Lampang. This is the first and only school
in Thailand for training elephants and the first in the world.
The centre is attached to the veterinary section of the Northern
Timber Work Division of the Forestry Industry Organization.
Local lunch en route and just before Chiang
Mai, sited in Lamphun, we visit Wat Phra That Hariphunchai.
The temple was built during the reign of King Arthitayarat,
a descendant of Queen Chamthewi some 800 years ago. A principal
landmark is the 46-metre tall golden Chedi whose present appearance
was the result of the restoration work in 1443 by a king of
Chiang Mai. It has long been regarded as a major place of worship.
Other architectural works include the ancient-style brick arch
adorned with fine designs and the pair of sculptured lions at
the door. There are also a square-shaped Chedi and a Khmer-style
Buddha statue. We will arrive in Chiang Mai in the afternoon
and end tour.
Tour Includes all transfers by air conditioned van or
coach with an English speaking guide, one night accommodation
at Lampang River Lodge, tourist class ( or similar ), 01 breakfast
and 02 lunches and all entrance fees ( horse cart and rental
of bicycles ). The tour does not include any beverages.
