Although famous for its waterfall, Erawan's
backcountry portion experiences little human traffic, and the
park's large mammals include tiger, elephant, gaur (the world's
largest species of wild cattle), sambar deer, barking deer,
serow (a mountain goat), wild boar, bears, and several primate
species. The diversity of other life-forms is awesome and each
field trip proves unique in terms of what we may encounter.
This trip focuses on how the diverse array of
flora and fauna of western Thailand utilise the natural resources
of the area. We explore such habitats as the forest canopy,
limestone caves, and the wide variety of forest types in Erawan
National Park. Additionally, local guides (some of them reformed
hunters) accompany us to offer indigenous expertise on wildlife
behaviour and ecology.
Through the use of specialised tools and techniques
we view the habitats of Erawan from a truly unique perspective.
We will take a look at the often unseen ecology of the forest
canopy, check out the diverse array of insects that apear at
night, and witness the involvement of man in sculpting today's
forests.
